A Gracious Castlemaine Lady
Kaweka, at 184 Hargraves Street, is a gracious late Victorian home set on four acres of prime land. Built in 1876 by H.D. McBean this iconic Castlemaine home originally belonged to John W.S. Thompson, a former Lord Mayor of Wellington, New Zealand. Thompson came to Castlemaine to manage the commercial side of the foundry which has had a prominent place in Castlemaine history. Thompson lived at the house till his death in 1910 after which it was acquired by FS Newell a solicitor. Store owner, Harry McIntosh, held the property from 1928 – 1986 when it was acquired by the present owners.
This early sketch shows the original plan for the building and landscaping. Adjustments were made to the house layout but the basis of the magnificent entrance is as was envisioned.
